I play softball, and my personal trainer has me do a lot of jump roping, i use the nike sparq balance board, agility ladders, plain old sprints, then sprint to a certain point stop and run back as quickly as you can. the point of the last one is to switch directions as quickly as possible. my favorite is start at 1st base, sprint to second dive into it, get up as fast as you can sprint back to 1st dive into it just go back and forth and when you cant do anymore… do 2 more. =D
good luck
Nothing improves your base running ability better than JUST running the bases. There is very little you can substitute for it.
A great drill to help improve speed is wind sprints. Here’s the drill that we used in my last year of high school and my first 2 years of college:
Set up cones at a starting point,10 yards,20 yards,30 yards,40 yards, and 50 yards. Run full speed 10 yards and then turn around and run full speed 10 yards back to the starting point. You would repeat this for each one. So basically you run 2 10′s,2 20′s,2 30′s,2 40′s, and 2 50′s. What we did was timed the 40′s and wrote it down. We conducted this drill once a week and just compared the times from the previous week. Eventually you will see an increase in speed. Also you can add a 60 yard into the mix because that’s what most baseball times are based on anyway.
